HIGH ON HEELS

It is said that High Heels are women’s best friends, after diamonds of course. High heels add a lot of style to a woman & certainly compliment her beauty. Heels can range anywhere between 2 inches to 4 inches.

 Low (<2.5 inches)
Mid heels (2.5 to 3.5 inches)
High heels (>3.5 inches)

Disastrous effects increase with increasing height. With every added inch, the pressure on forefoot increases by 25 to 30%.When you wear high heels your centre of gravity shifts forward. To compensate for it you need to bend your knees, hips, increase your lumbar lordosis (back curve) and have to sway forward. An unbalanced posture increases pressure on your knees and especially in your patellofemoral  joints (under the knee caps) by 25%. It also alters pressure points in your sacroiliac and facetal joints (joints of lower back). These pathological pressures cause pain in these joints.

Unbalanced Posture:
When you wear high heels your centre of gravity shifts forward. To compensate for it you need to bend your knees, hips, increase your lumbar lordosis (back curve) and have to sway forward.

 Pain in Knees & Joints:
An unbalanced posture increases pressure on your knees and especially in your patellofemoral joints (under the knee caps) by 25%. It also alters pressure points in your sacroiliac and facetal joints (joints of lower back). These pathological pressures cause pain in these joints.

Other harmful effects:
Shortening of the calf muscles.
Permanent deformities in the ankle and foot
Compressed toes
Tissue Damage

Along with elegance & grace, high heels bring about certain disadvantages which can be avoided by their judicious use:
Regular footwear should have flat heels or heels upto 1”.
Platform heels give a better balance than stilettos
High heels should be avoided, if required midsize heels can be used occasionally.
When wearing high heels, avoid walking or standing for a longer duration.
After wearing heels the following exercises are recommended.

Exercises to be done after wearing high heels:
Sit on a chair
Stretch out your legs in front of you.
Lift your feet slightly off the floor.
Bend ankles & point feet toward you.
Bend ankles & point feet away from you.
Repeat this till you feel you ankles & thigh muscles are stretched enough.
