Vitiligo – Stop the Social Stigma

Vitiligo also is known as Vitium Blemish is a condition in which there is a patchy loss of pigment (melanin) from skin/mucous membrane along with the loss of hair over the affected area.

Globally 1% of the population is affected. Both men and women are equally affected.

The exact cause of the disease is unknown. Various suggested include genetic factors or association with other systemic diseases.  Few studies have also shown that stress can also be one of the aggravating factors.

Against the popular belief, Vitiligo is a non-contagious disease, meaning it does not spread through physical contact or sharing of food, washrooms or clothing.

To reach at an exact diagnosis of Vitiligo, a differentiation has to be made from other hypopigmentation disorders like Leprosy, Fungal infections, Pityriasis Alba etc.

What is the treatment protocol for Vitiligo?
Various treatment options are advised depending on the extent of spread or involvement of disease.
Standard therapy includes:-
  • Administration of intra-lesional steroid injections
  • Oral Steroid therapy
  • UV Light or phototherapy
  • Cosmetic camouflage

In cases with extensive involvement of body- depigmentation of the entire body is performed, but it has various risks involved with the procedure. The greatest example of whole body depigmentation is a legendary singer & celebrity Michael Jackson.
Apart from therapy, patients require a lot of “Emotional Counseling” and support from friends and family.

It is imperative to break the social stigma attached to the disease. Awareness should be raised to stop the discrimination.
